Initially, as a staff nurse, I practiced in the areas of obstetrical and high-risk obstetrical nursing. After receiving a master's degree, I transitioned into nursing education. I have been a nurse educator for the past 21 years and have taught in both the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs at Nebraska Methodist College and as an adjunct online teacher for the University of Texas in their master's of nursing program. I also am a Certified Lamaze Childbirth Educator teaching childbirth classes at the Women's Hospital in Omaha Nebraska.
In my professor of nursing role, in the undergraduate program, I have mainly taught pediatrics, and faith community nursing. In the past, I have taught obstetrics too. After earning a PhD, I began teaching in the online graduate program in courses such as professional role development, research, and instructional methods. I have had the privilege of helping graduate nursing students complete their final research projects.
I have co-authored an obstetrical and pediatric text book package including the ancillary products that comprise of a main 1400 page text, a clinical pocket companion, faculty CD, student CD and accompanying website. The text book package is called Ward & Hisley Maternal Child Nursing Care: Optimizing Outcomes for Mothers, Children & Families. This book package received the American Journal of Nursing Award in 2009. I have published several journal articles on a variety of topics and served as an article reviewer for The Journal of Pediatric Nursing. I am currently completing a reference book called Pediatric Nursing Care: Best Evidence-Based Practices to be published in 2012. Finally, I have co-written and received a variety of grants including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation - New Careers in nursing grant 2 years in a row.
Professional Service/Recognition/Charitable Work
Responsibilities at Nebraska Methodist College include coordinating the Accelerated Nursing program (ACE) and flu shot clinics. As a nurse educator, I have focused on Service Learning and have developed partnerships with several metropolitan schools (pre-school through high-school), the American Red Cross as well as a partnership with a group of ecumenical churches in South East Omaha. I have helped nurses at Methodist Health System learn about Evidence Based Practice and was a co-investigator on a qualitative research project about the Rapid Response Team.
