Arts & Sciences Overview

Courses in the Arts and Sciences Division build the knowledge, skills and values of a competent healthcare practitioner who is an Educated Citizen. NMC graduates gain the technical and professional skills required by today’s caregivers in healthcare. The Educated Citizen core curriculum leads graduates to become:

  • Responsible, holistic, integrated and critical thinkers as they connect the dots as reflective individuals.
  • True professionals who interact confidently and gain results with a variety of other individuals as effective communicators.
  • Culturally responsive citizens who make a difference in their communities and in the world as change agents.

These competencies are achieved as each student completes coursework in the Educated Citizen core curriculum and synthesizes individual learning experiences into their Educated Citizen Portfolio, a collection of documented achievements and goals showcased by each student upon graduation.

Meet the Faculty

Our arts & sciences faculty are highly experienced and credentialed in their own fields, giving you constant real-world insight you can use. While any instructor can recite from a textbook, ours go a step further and draw from vast personal and professional experiences. Instructors here care as deeply about their students as they do the subject matter and it shows.

Student Experiences

In NMC Science Laboratories, you will be engaged in your learning by utilizing a multimodal approach to hands-on experiences, enhancing the level of knowledge and critical thinking you will take forward to future courses and clinical practice. Group-based learning is emphasized, where you will regularly interact with your peers, developing teamwork and communication skills which will be paramount to success in your career.

Students in all science labs utilize skills on their iPads through the creation of digital laboratory reports, which allows for a deeper level of understanding and learning. All of the above demonstrates that science labs at NMC offer a unique blend of laboratory experiences that set our students apart by most effectively preparing them for the next step in their journey.

Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Statement

Anatomy-786A1834

In the Anatomy & Physiology lab you will gain a holistic perspective to the organization of the human body and the relationships of all organ systems.  This is accomplished by incorporating human cadavers, Anatomage Table, mammalian tissue dissections, models, microscopes, and several functional procedures.  Students get to study the human body anywhere outside the lab through an integrated iPad anatomy atlas app.

The Anatomage Table is an interactive system that showcases digital renderings of human donor bodies.  The cadaver lab features four preserved human donor bodies that have been prosected by specialists.  The combination of these resources allows you to view intricate details on real specimens, which far exceeds the experience of learning without them.  While normal structure and function is focused on, abnormalities and disease processes are introduced through various methods.

Chemistry Laboratory Statement

We offer a semester-long, hands-on chemistry and physics laboratory experience to expound upon foundational concepts which underpin the healthcare field. Focusing on a curriculum tailored to the healthcare profession, we focus on general, organic, and biochemistry experiments.

Microbiology Laboratory Statement

Micro-786A9632In the Microbiology lab, a Biological Safety Cabinet II allows students a unique opportunity to work with pathogens, a feature not commonly available in many other college labs. This equipment stands as an essential tool in microbiology labs, ensuring the safety of both students and faculty when handling microorganisms. Its presence maintains a secure, sterile, and compliant workspace.  Biological Safety Cabinets come in different classes (Class I, II, III) tailored to varying levels of protection needed. These distinct classes effectively prevent cross-contamination among samples, preserving the accuracy and reliability of scientific experiments.
To provide students with practical experiences mirroring real-world situations, microbiology labs intricately link slide specimens and models with clinical case scenarios, employ techniques like culturing microorganisms from various sources (including environmental samples), use methods such as the streak plate for isolation and identification, and perform gram staining for diagnostic purposes. This integrated approach aims to offer a more comprehensive and realistic comprehending of the subject matter.

I greatly enjoyed my experience in NMC’s Art’s & Sciences program specifically in my humanities course as my teacher would take the time to provide constructive criticism that enabled me to build upon my critical thinking skills.”

My experience in the Arts & Science classes here at NMC have been nothing short of amazing. The faculty have done an incredible job making my classmates and I feel cared for and heard. There hasn’t been a single instance where I felt lost and no one could help me. At NMC you will always have someone to support you and your goals.

Throughout my college career, I have had some great experiences with professors but I don't think I have had quite as an amazing experience than with this professor. I did not think I would enjoy Pathophysiology/Pharmacology as much as I did, thanks to this professor. Nothing makes learning more fun than involving students in group activities and games.  He went above and beyond to help teach students challenging course material. . It is a goal (I hope) of every professor to see the success of their students but I don't think I know of any professor who encouraged and motivated students more than this person.
