Melanie Thompson is an Omaha native who began her nursing career later in life. She previously worked as a Registered Nurse on the Oncology/Hematology Special Care Unit at Nebraska Medicine where she provided care for pediatric and adult patients with blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma. It was on this unit that she discovered her passion for nursing education.
Since 2015, Melanie has been employed in nursing education teaching a variety of courses including Foundations, Pharmacology, Medical/Surgical, and Transition to Practice. She has also served as Assistant Dean of Nursing and NCLEX Success Coach. Most recently Melanie was employed as the Assistant Provost of Curriculum and Assessment at a nursing college in Utah.
Melanie’s educational background includes a Master in Nursing Education from Nebraska Methodist College and a Bachelor of Nursing from Creighton University. She also holds Master and Bachelor degrees in Business Administration from Bellevue University. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Nursing Education at Liberty University and hopes to graduate in December 2023.
Melanie’s philosophy of nursing education is summed up in Plutarch’s quote “A mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be ignited.” She looks forward in embarking on a new journey at Nebraska Methodist College and contributing to its great legacy in preparing highly competent nurses to serve diverse populations and communities.
