(OMAHA)  - Nebraska Methodist College - The Josie Harper Campus (NMC) will hold an open house at NMC's newly expanded Nursing Arts Center. The celebration will be Wednesday, April 25, 4-7 p.m., in the Clark Center on NMC's campus at 87th and Burt Streets.

The public is invited to tour the state-of-the-art nursing simulation facility designed to replicate the hospital environment students will encounter upon graduation.

"We have come a long way in the nine years that I have been teaching at NMC. We've gone from working with one low fidelity patient care manikin and a few task trainers in the basement of an old motel to this amazing state of the art facility. We are really lucky," said Jenny Elbracht, an assistant professor of nursing.

The Nursing Arts Center recently underwent an expansion and renovation that now features extensive laboratory, observation and classroom space. In addition to demonstrations and tours of the lab, the Mobile Diabetes Center will also be on site.

The nursing labs are set up and furnished with the equipment students will be using in the actual clinical environment.  However, the patients are high fidelity simulators designed to mimic the tendencies and functions of a live patient. The simulators are able to display symptoms from a variety of illnesses, change vital signs, constrict pupils, have seizures, expel bodily fluids, and even speak to the caregivers.

The program has named the family, the Watsons, after nursing theorist Jean Watson, whose theory of caring is the foundation of the NMC nursing program. The family features four adults, two children and one infant, including Noelle who can simulate full child birth. The lab also has five more patient care manikins.

Refreshments and tours will be provided throughout the event.
