On September 8, Nebraska Methodist College will bring its departments together to take part in an Interdisciplinary Scenario. Students of various degree programs will partner to provide care to "patients" brought in following a mock car accident.

Omaha, Nebraska- Students at Nebraska Methodist College will soon have a unique opportunity to experience firsthand what it's like to care as a team for patients rushed into the emergency room following a traumatic accident.

The school, established in 1891 and gearing up for its 125th Anniversary, is hosting its first ever Interdisciplinary Day on September 8th. The idea behind this exercise is to prepare students for the high-pressure situations they'll find themselves in once they enter the healthcare environment.

Students at the college will be presented a scenario wherein a family on its way to a reunion is involved in a single-vehicle auto accident. After watching a video that depicts this traumatic event and describes the victims' injuries at length, the students will break into teams to assess each family member's situation and provide appropriate care.

Held in laboratory suites across campus, the event will use a variety of state-of-the-art patient simulations that enable participants to experience exactly the types of situations they'll confront in the real world. These simulations are essentially high-tech mannequins that a member of the faculty is able to control in response to the students' actions and according to the scenario guidelines.

"We're incredibly excited about this opportunity to emphasize to our students that healthcare doesn't take place alone, but within an inter-professional healthcare team" said Dr. Linda Hughes, dean of Nursing at Nebraska Methodist College. "Healthcare can be a challenge, especially in a high stress situation. But for the people who are capable of collaborating and communicating with other members of the team, it can also be one of the most rewarding experiences in the world."

Interdisciplinary Day will take place at Nebraska Methodist College on September 8th between 1 PM and 5 PM.
