Making a difference - the sea star thrower story - image

About NMC Alumni Association

Why the Starfish? Because one person can make a difference, even in its smallest form.

The Starfish Story

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed
a figure in the distance.  As he got closer, he realized the figure was that
of a boy picking up and gently throwing something in to the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?"

The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean.
You see, the sun is coming up and the tide is going out.
If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

"Son," the man said, "don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach
and hundreds and thousands of starfish? You cannot possibly make a difference."

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the ocean.  Then, smiling at the man, he said,
"but I made a difference for that one."
