Course Description

Course Description 

Purpose Statement: This training will enhance the understanding of the multiple and often overlapping issues and concerns in financial exploitation. Professionals in the human services organizations attending the training will gain insights into the magnitude of the problem from real case examples, learn to identify red flags, identify the measures older Nebraskans must take to prevent elder abuse and financial exploitation, how to file a consumer fraud complaint and how to access the tools and services to prevent financial exploitation.

Participants will be able to:

  • Explore how legal and medical needs interact and how meeting the legal needs of patients can impact the outcome of their health care treatment.
  • Address the collaborative effort between the Office of Public Guardian and the healthcare system. The newly implemented Volunteer Court Visitor program will also be discussed.
  • Discuss elder abuse/financial exploitation cases and how they impact the seniors' physical and mental health. Participants will learn how a financial exploitation case is reported, investigated and prosecuted from start to finish.
  • Understand the mission and structure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the consumer complaint process and how to access the tools and services to help prevent financial exploitation.
  • Hear from a panel of experts regarding technology and internet-related scams,  trends in banking and financial services scams. Participants will learn how to protect vulnerable adults in the financial world and identify likely identity thieves.
  • Discover an overview of the variety of resources available, such as the Service Directory, Library, Legislate, Links, Assistive Devices, and MyPHR.
  • Learn about the debt collection process including debt collection agencies, assessing ability and need to repay, and student loans.   

Program Outcomes:

  • Participants will report an increase in knowledge regarding fundamentals of protecting seniors from financial exploitation.
  • Participants will state at least one way they will incorporate tips and strategies about consumer protection from financial exploitation into their practice.
