Course Description

Purpose Statement: The purpose of this program is to enhance health professionals' skills in caring for women in labor and their support person. 

Participant will be able to:

• Analyze the nurses' impact on maternal and neonatal outcomes and on maternal satisfaction.
• Describe the role of the nurse in promoting physiological labor and birth.
• Evaluate intrapartum practices according to standards of evidence-based care.
• List the components of a safe and supportive birth environment.
• Practice a wide variety of nonpharmacologic labor support techniques which both enhance labor and decrease pain.
• Adopt evidence-based strategies for supporting a laboring woman during second stage.
• Describe effective practices to promote first attachment and exclusive breast milk feeding.
• Identify strategies to overcome barriers to change.
