Course Description

Course Description

This program will provide information on exercise training strategies that benefit cancer patients and survivors.

Participants will be able to:

  • Introduce the participants to the basics of oncology including disease processes and medical treatments. 
  • Introduce the participants to the basics of exercise physiology including the types of exercise, the physiologic responses to acute and chronic exercise and the adverse effects of inactivity and sitting.
  • Introduce the participants to the current perception and need for exercise training in the care and treatment of cancer survivors.
  • Introduce the participants to the basics of available methods used to assess physical fitness and functional capacity of cancer survivors.
  • Introduce the participants to currently available exercise guidelines developed specifically for the cancer survivor.
  • Introduce the participants to the basics of creating an exercise prescription for cancer survivors. Participants will write prescriptions for "paper patients".
  • Enhance participants' understanding of exercise testing/functional assessment by conducting an outcome measurements laboratory. 
  • Participants will be introduced to the use of available assessment tools and asked to develop assessment tools based on available equipment.
