Purpose Statement: This program will provide information on basic cardiac monitoring principles and rhythm interpretation.
Participants will be able to:
- Review basic cardiac anatomical structures and their function(s).
- Identify the components of the electrical conduction system of the heart.
- Identify basic ECG components and how they correspond and relate to the intrinsic electrical activity of the heart.
- Demonstrate accurate measurement techniques for the basic components of the ECG including heart rate.
- Recognize key characteristics of sinus rhythms including sinus rhythm, sinus bradycardia, sinus tachycardia, sinus pause, sinus arrest and sinus arrhythmia.
- Recognize key characteristics of atrial rhythms including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia, and premature atrial complexes.
- Recognize key characteristics of junctional rhythms including junctional rhythm, junctional bradycardia, accelerated junctional rhythm, junctional tachycardia, and premature junctional complexes.
- Recognize key characteristics of ventricular rhythms including ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and premature ventricular complexes.
- Recognize key characteristics of various heart blocks including first degree block, second degree block type I and type II, and complete heart block.
- Identify basic components of cardiac pacing systems and characteristics of paced rhythms.
- Recognize potential problems that warrant immediate intervention and troubleshooting in ECG equipment as well as patient condition.
