Course Description

Purpose Statement: The purpose of this workshop is to educate and prepare facilitator teams for 'A Time to Heal'- a holistic rehabilitation/wellness program for cancer survivors and their caregivers.

Participant will be able to:

  • Explain research underpinning rehabilitation for cancer survivors.
  • Discuss cancer in America and various common treatment modalities.
  • Explore common "survivor" issues post treatment for cancer and traditional resources.
  • Discuss research underpinning "A Time to Heal".
  • Describe "A Time To Heal".
  • Demonstrate typical 'A Time to Heal' session protocol.
  • Discuss the resilience of cancer survivors (Chapter 1).
  • Discuss the power of intention and the mind-body relationship as it pertains to health and wellbeing (Chapter 2).
  • Discuss healing through relaxation and comforting techniques (Chapter 3).
  • Discuss the common physiological sequelae of cancer treatments and strategies to induce optimal physical healing (Chapter 4).
  • Discuss the physiological, emotional, and cognitive aspects of fear and the strategies to move forward in the face of fear.  (Chapter 5)
  • Discuss the role of nutrition in healing (Chapter 6).
  • Discuss assessing the status of relationships with self, family and friends, and with sexuality and ways to improve relationships that have suffered due to the cancer experience (Chapter 7).
  • Discuss how to rehabilitate the body after cancer treatment, lymphedema survivor concerns, and  fatigue in the cancer survivor (Chapter 8).
  • Discuss the repercussions of serious illness upon the spirit and ways to find and nourish the things that give meaning to our lives, and to strengthen personal spirituality (Chapter 9). 
  • Discuss the research, recommendations, and rationale underpinning the use or non-use of supplements for cancer survivors (Chapter 10).
  • Discuss finding what brings joy and zest to survivors' lives and how to help them set individual goals to enhance their lives (Chapter 11).
  • Discuss happiness as it pertains to being a survivor and ways that survivors can find happiness in their post-treatment experiences (Chapter 12).
  • Describe "A Time to Heal" Facilitator guidelines.
  • Discuss multiple types of cancer.
  • Discuss strategies for working with mixed gender groups.
  • Examine group dynamics under unique circumstances in all cancer plus caregiver groups.
  • Complete workshop evaluation.
