Nursing salaries for nurse educators vary widely in the U.S. and are based upon many factors including geography, job description, specialty and experience. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary in May 2021 for Postsecondary Nursing Instructors and Teachers in the United States was $77,440 per year, with a much faster than average projected job growth of 12 percent between 2021 and 2031.

  • It's a great option for working RNs with an MSN degree who have a passion for both teaching and the profession of nursing.
  • The curriculum is 14 credit hours. Among the topics covered are curricular design, instructional and teaching modalities and practicum. 
  • Courses are five or ten weeks long, with one week off before the start of the next course.
  • Students can access courses at any time of the day and from anywhere with Internet access.
  • Upon completion of the certificate, graduates may be eligible for the NLN Certified Nurse Educator Exam.

Admissions Information

Criteria

Applicants are evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Master of Science degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution
  • Applicants who have a Master of Science or Arts degree in healthcare fields will be considered on an individual basis
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Non- Nebraska Residents meet State Authorization.  If you do not plan to reside in Nebraska while enrolled in Nebraska Methodist College courses or clinicals, please see our State Authorization Regulations page for potential restrictions on our ability to offer you education at a distance.

Prospective students may apply anytime and are accepted from deadlines throughout the year. Applications will be reviewed upon receipt, and students will be notified of their application status by letter or phone.

Curriculum

All nurse educator certificate students are required to complete specific coursework. The following plan represents progression for the online post-master's certificate as a nurse educator.  There are a total of 14 credit hours to complete.

NRS 542
TEACHING-LEARNING PRINCIPLES FOR NURSING EDUCATION
DETAILS

In this course, students learn about their role as a nurse educator and the nursing education environment. Adult learning characteristics and behaviors will be assimilated into the learning environment. The functionality of learning theories and nursing clinical judgment models within nursing education will be investigated. Students will incorporate current nursing knowledge of motivation, learning styles, and interprofessional education into the higher education setting. The implications of technology, diversity, inclusion, and equality will be explored within the role as a nurse educator. (For students matriculating MSN courses Fall 2023)

Prerequisites: NRS 509 or by permission (NRS 502 or by permission for students matriculating MSN courses August 2024)

NRS 544
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS
DETAILS

In this course, students integrate various educational strategies into the clinical, classroom, and online environments. The student will investigate the domains of learning and taxonomy verbiage within various learning environments. Students construct components of simulation activities into the education of nurses. Students will apply best practices in the writing, revising, and analyzing of nursing licensure exam questions and the accompanying statistical analysis. (For students matriculating MSN courses Fall 2023)

NRS 548
Curriculum/Program Development & Evaluation
DETAILS

In this course, students integrate previous academic/experiential learning into the development of curricula and programs. Students will employ evidence and theory in curricular design and course content development within higher education and healthcare programs. Students will develop course and programmatic assessment and evaluation methods. Students examine the function of accrediting bodies within nursing education. (For students matriculating MSN courses Fall 2023. For students matriculating in MSN courses Fall 2024: The incorporation of 50 practicum hours enriches the learning experience through application of program planning practices.)

NRS 549
PRACTICUM IN NURSING EDUCATION
DETAILS

In this course, students will synthesize teaching and learning principles into the role of a nurse educator. Students select a nurse educator who will serve as a preceptor within the classroom and clinical environment. Collaborative opportunities within the practicum setting will be explored. Students will implement teaching-learning theories and strategies in an educational project. The precepted experience allows for practical application of the Nurse Educator role. (For students matriculating MSN courses Fall 2023)
