Course Description
This six-hour course is offered for health care professionals currently performing phlebotomy procedures or anticipating performing these in the future. Topics include types of blood specimens, blood collection equipment, specimen collection techniques for venipuncture, complications and remedies, special collection procedures, safety regulations and quality assurance as related to phlebotomy. Venipuncture on practice arms and fellow participants will be included.
Purpose Statement: To present information on blood specimen types, equipment and techniques, complications and remedies, safety regulations and quality assurance to health care professionals currently performing phlebotomy procedures or anticipating performing these in the future.

Participants will be able to:
- Describe blood collection equipment and explain correct specimen labeling, transport and storage for laboratory testing.
- Practice routine venipuncture using an evacuated tube system, syringe and butterfly needle.
- Describe remedies to venipuncture technique complications.
- Discuss safety regulations and quality assurance procedures required by OSHA and laboratory regulatory agencies.

Marjorie DiLorenzo, MT (ASCP), SH is the phlebotomy program coordinator for Nebraska Methodist College, is a registered medical technologist and specialist in hematology by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
