Service-Learning
Service is important to NMC and it is deeply rooted in our campus culture. Our campus community engages in service to live out the college’s core values of caring, excellence, holism, learning and respect. At NMC, the Center for Health Partnerships serves to facilitate NMC’s service-learning and volunteer program through curriculum development, project design and implementation, community partner development, and community outreach.
Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that allows for students to apply classroom-based concepts in community settings and then the students are guided in reflective activities, which advance their understanding of course objectives and community concerns. The strategy integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Overall, service-learning provides students with a hands-on approach to learning.
NMC offers an extensive service-learning program that is integrated into both the nursing and allied health programs. The Corporation for National and Community Service honored Nebraska Methodist College and the Center for Health Partnerships with a place on the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the third consecutive year. The Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.
Furthermore, NMC offers opportunities for students to engage in co-curricular service-learning projects and volunteer opportunities. Please view our Upcoming Events section for details about our service opportunities.
The Center has compiled basic resources on service-learning pedagogy and professional development in this area. Please click on our service-learning resource sheet below for these helpful resources.
