Course Description

Purpose Statement:

This 2-day course is designed to prepare nurses working in progressive care units, stepdown units, or telemetry units to take the PCCN exam. Content is based on AACN's blueprint for the PCCN exam and includes a review of the pathophysiology, assessment, monitoring, and management of patients typically cared for in a progressive care or stepdown unit.

Systems covered include cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, hematology/immunology, neurology, gastrointestinal, renal, and multisystem problems. Behavioral and psychosocial issues are discussed and professional caring and ethical practice topics are addressed.

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe pathophysiology, clinical presentation, assessment, and monitoring of patients in progressive care units who have problems involving the following systems: cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, hematology/immunology, neurology, gastrointestinal, and renal.
  • Discuss pharmacological and nonpharmacological management strategies for patients in progressive care units who have problems involving the above systems.
  • Discuss behavioral and psychosocial issues common to patients in progressive care units.
  • Discuss the following professional caring and ethical practice concepts: advocacy/ moral agency, caring practices, collaboration, systems thinking, response to diversity, clinical inquiry, and facilitation of learning.
To receive continuing education credit, participants must attend both days. Credit will not be given for only one day of attendance.
