General Background
Following several months as the interim vice president for academic affairs, Dr. Hughes officially retired from NMC in March 2018 and became an adjunct faculty member.
Dr. Hughes served as the dean of nursing from 2012 to 2017. Prior to assuming the duties of dean, she was the director of undergraduate nursing programs, a position she began in 2005.
Dr. Hughes has been a staff nurse, charge nurse and head nurse and has taught in diploma, associate degree, bachelor degree, and graduate nursing programs in both face to face and online classrooms.
Notable Publications/Presentations
Dr. Hughes's publications include articles in Nurse Educator, Orthopaedic Nursing, American Journal of Critical Care and Journal of Nursing from imanagers publications.com. She has been a reviewer of Pagana & Pagana Mosby's Manual at Diagnostic and Laboratory tests, peer reviewer of articles for RINAH and a test question writer for Elsevier. Her research interests include interventions for fibromyalgia patients, teach back methodology for congestive heart patients, and the assessment of nursing skills of new BSN graduates.

Dr. Hughes professional activities include the Nebraska Nurses Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau, and Nebraska Association of Nursing Deans and Directors.
